I recently discovered the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, PA – the home and studio of early American modern artist Charles Demuth (1883-1935). It’s an intimate, small museum with display space on the first floor and the artist’s light-filled studio upstairs overlooking the courtyard garden below. This is where he created most of his finished works….

I recently visited the newly opened Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. While it’s not a house museum, I was so impressed that I wanted to share my thoughts on it. The museum’s collection does include the tent that George Washington lived in during the war, so I’ll take a leap and say it has a bit of a “housing” connection.

Some people drive along a country road and don’t notice an old house with a sign outside. I, on the other hand, pull over to the side of the road and can’t wait for the chance to wander into that same house. I enjoy seeing children’s toys, a writing desk or cooking utensils. I try to imagine the everyday life of the people who used them. Every house tells a story – stories about life, love, loss, money, war and survival.

I had such a nice time wandering around the historic neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria on a beautiful April day. I started my adventure at the Visitor Center located at 221 King Street. After gathering brochures on all the nearby attractions, I wandered along King Street and took in the shops and restaurants. Then I headed down to the waterfront. Along the way, I meandered down the brick sidewalks of a few side streets. The houses are maintained beautifully, retaining their historic charm.
